"List your top 200 albums of all time."
Notwithstanding my opinion that two hundred favorite albums were way too many to decide upon, order, and list, the idea was fascinating. Other members posted their lists (only a handful, though) and I relished them, agreeing with some entries, scoffing at others, comparing it all to some vague mental sketch of what my own list might look like.
I had no plans to make my own list. I knew it would be entirely too time-consuming, which is why I found it so absurd in the first place. Other members were content to push out a list in an hour or so, or to list the necessary amount of albums but only order them alphabetically, but I knew that I wouldn't be able to put to little effort into mine. I would be compelled to slave over it, to work at every detail and scrutinize my own choices until I felt them above reproach, and until I felt I could make a defense for every entry, and its specific place on the list. It would be as ironclad as a Ph.D dissertation about to undergo a defense. But I'm not working on a Ph.D, and this list wouldn't be nearly so important, so I shouldn't get myself involved.
That was my attitude until another poster mentioned me in a surprisingly flattering way, essentially suggesting that whatever list of "top 200 albums" I make could potentially trump any other list. I wasn't aware I had that kind of reputation on this message board, and it was enough to push me to do what, let's be honest, I really wanted to do all along.
After four days, I posted my completed list. And here, I want to share it again. It's just too perfect a specimen not to repeat (if you'll forgive my biased endorsement).
Not to make an already overlong introduction too much longer (and the irony of such a preface to such a list is not lost on me), I need to make a few other notes.
1) Others list-makers felt that certain things were inappropriate, such as multiple selections from the same artist, or live albums. I didn't see the point of any such rule. The only proviso I felt appropriate was that they be albums, not EPs or compilations or any such thing. I concede that this was stretched with the inclusion of two two-album-compilations each ranked as a single album (#'s 34 and 102, respectively), but I felt that these re-releases worked very well as single entities, and also considered that they have each overshadowed their original releases.
2) Studies have shown that people's opinion of a work of art changes and matures as familiarity sets in over time. Some have theorized that five years' age should be reached before said art should be judged. I couldn't resist the lure of some albums made after 2005, so I restricted myself to three years--nothing on this list is more recent than 2007. However certain I may now feel that Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago" deserves a place, it hasn't fully aged.
3) The only other restriction I was forced to make was to exclude classical albums. As much as I love classical music, and could easily rank many of my favorite classical compositions among these favorite non-classical musics, there was the rub: I listen to classical music almost solely by the composition, not by the recording. So while Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" may rightfully deserve a spot in my top 20, I can't assign such an honor to one orchestra's recording over another. I did make a shortlist of my favorite classical compositions, and I will include that at the end.
